Event Recap
The KBTCC Herding Instinct and Lure Coursing Event [on 09/25/2011] was a great success! We enjoyed a beautiful day in the country with KBT friends and our beloved canines. Our request for good weather was processed timely, for the day turned out beautifully warm and sunny! In case you were unable to join us, we thought we’d share some details of our FUN event! Please enjoy!
Over 20 entrants and guests came out to support the event. Shannon Wolfe our herding instructor extraordinaire and her sidekick ‘Cisco’ provided us with an impressive and informative herding demonstration. Cisco and the rest of the ‘Wolfe pac’ showed us how the professionals make it all look so easy! Ten Kerries then gave the Herding Instinct evaluation a try; most really enjoyed the experience and exhibited their natural instinct to herd. A few owners held their own ‘Sheep Party’ thou, to show their Kerries just how much fun this whole herding sheep thing can be (thanks ladies for a great show)!
We enjoyed each other’s company and made new friends while enjoying an awesome lunch together (thank you potluck contributors). Afterwards, the lure coursing began. Jim & Pat Perry set up a HUGE lure course that zigzagged in several different directions. The lure coursing was open to all breeds, so in addition to Kerries, a Poodle, Ridgeback mix, Lowchen, Border Collie and Border Terrier all joined in on the fun! It was a hoot to watch the dogs chase the lure – didn’t know a plastic bag tied to a string could be so much fun, did you?
‘Smiles’ were clearly visible on the faces of the Poodle, the Ridgeback mix, and the Lowchen as they ran the course. The Border Collie’s approach was to lie in wait and ambush the lure as it moved towards him, while the Border Terrier just ran her heart out chasing the lure that was as big as she was! The Kerries each had their own style too. Some were interested in just running free and playing – I’m NOT gonna chase a silly plastic bag! In contrast, most Kerries ran with such determination, chasing that elusive lure! One Kerry thought it was SO much fun, he ran four consecutive rotations WITHOUT the lure (great recall Rhaps!). The oldest Kerry bitch ran a very respectable time while the youngster, only 8 months old, ran the fastest – he took his lure job very seriously! Most Kerries put their nose to the lure and ran their hearts out. Prizes were awarded to the fastest canine in each group; they were:
| Large: | Anna (Ridgeback Mix) with time of 29.34 seconds |
| | Bosley (Standard Poodle) 38.48 seconds |
| Small: | Hawkeye (Border Terrier) 34.37 seconds |
| | Ya Ya (Lowchen) 37.57 |
| Kerries: | Boobie | 24.84 seconds |
| | Rhapsody | 29.75 |
| | Rohan | 30.70 |
| | Indy | 31.08 |
| | Willie | 32.18 |
| | Flurry | 37.47 |
The rest of the Kerries - Ailish, Darwin, Max & Nova - thought running and playing was a much better and fun idea!!
It was a wonderful day and all dogs and their human companions had a great time! We had so much fun, we even forgot about the Packer-Bear game underway (GB fans knew the outcome anyway). Thank you to all who participated and came out to support this event! A big THANK YOU for the endless hours contributed by the ‘behind-the-scenes’ members - the KBTCC would not be what it is without you!! We hope you enjoyed sharing event with us!
Best Regards,
